Science & Social Studies Curriculum (Grades K–2)

In Kindergarten through 2nd grade, our students explore science and social studies through the Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA) curriculum. CKLA integrates content-rich topics into reading instruction, allowing students to build strong background knowledge while developing foundational literacy skills.

Through carefully designed units, students encounter a wide range of topics in both science and social studies. These include:

  • Science: Topics such as the human body, animals and habitats, weather, plants, simple machines, and the five senses introduce students to key scientific concepts and vocabulary. Lessons promote curiosity, observation, and an understanding of the natural world.
  • Social Studies: Units include foundational knowledge in areas like community roles, early world civilizations, U.S. symbols and holidays, geography, and important historical figures. These topics help students develop a sense of identity, citizenship, and an understanding of their place in the world.

By weaving science and social studies content into engaging read-alouds, discussions, and hands-on activities, CKLA ensures students not only learn to read—but also read to learn. This integrated approach strengthens comprehension and critical thinking, preparing young learners for deeper exploration in later grades.
